Michelle and I were tasked with designing an innovative roof structure that spanned a 100ft x 200ft plot. We wanted our design to feature an organic form that was also modular to accommodate the rapidly changing needs of urban environments today. We decided on a steel structure with tiered truss systems and corrugated roofing.
Terra taught me about the real complexity of designing a full scale structural system. While our final design leaves something to be desired, I learned how to perform comprehensive truss analysis using matrices, size individual elements based on local compressive forces, and determine material composition to assess environmental impacts. I loved the process of learning new skills to develop an idea in great detail.
